Solution Focused Coaching & Counseling
The Solution Focused (SF) approach is about having a conversation that helps lead to change in people’s lives in a short space of time. For me, the thing that stands out about this approach is that the starting point is always the end, how you want things to be. By focusing on this and how you might know it’s happening tends to help people maybe think about things differently, maybe do some things differently and definitely do more of the things that are already working. Each person ultimately decides to do or not do what fits for them in their own life.
I grew up in the American Midwest in the State of Missouri and moved to the UK in the summer of 2006. And whenever I tell people that, the first question they tend to ask is, “Why on Earth would you want to move over here?” My answer is always the same: It seemed like a good idea at the time.
I had just finished my Masters in Social Work at University, and while I knew that I was in the right type of field, as I wanted to be part of a helping profession, I had no idea where I wanted to work or who I wanted to work with. So I figured that I might as well head to the UK, get some good experience for my CV and travel a bit while I was at it. Needless to say I’m still here, and I’m planning on sticking around!
Finding My Passion
I’m definitely glad that I have stuck around as my life has changed dramatically over these past twelve years. While the various roles I have had as a Social Worker have had their ups and downs, for me, in some of them there was something missing, something that made me feel like I wasn’t doing what I set out to do when I made the decision to go into the field in the first place.
I wanted to be able to do something that helped people make changes in their lives and for those changes to be lasting changes so that ultimately the people I worked with wouldn’t need professionals. So when I came across the Solution Focused approach, it really connected with me and sounded like it did exactly what I was hoping to do from the beginning of my career, and I haven’t looked back since.
I have been fortunate enough to receive vast amounts of training from Harvey Ratner, Chris Iveson and Evan George at BRIEF while also earning a Diploma in Solution Focused Practice from them in 2015. I am currently a member of the UK Association for Solution Focused Practice (UKASFP) as well as being a UKASFP Accredited Solution Focused Practitioner.
I have focused on using SF with young people and families, and seeing the impact that this has had on people’s lives has motivated me to continue to fine-tune my own skills and to expand into using SF in the field of coaching.
